Globally, people with disabilities represent more than one billion people. In the U.S., 26% of adults – about 61 million people – live with a disability. Disability is a natural part of the human experience, and it crosses lines of age, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status and religion.

We are proud of our achievements in this space and of reaching a top score of 100 this year, which demonstrates our long-term commitment toward constant improvement and consciousness of the many differences that make up our company culture

Businesses have the power to drive the global advancement of disability inclusion, and we’re thrilled to see more companies than ever leverage the Disability Equality Index to measure their progress. We recognize these top-scoring companies as a ‘Best Place to Work for Disability Inclusion’ for their passion and efforts to lead the way in creating greater equity for people with disabilities in the workplace, marketplace, and supply chain,” said Jill Houghton, President and CEO of Disability:IN.

In 2022, Takeda applied for the certification for the first time and received a score of 90, noting strengths in benefits plans and programs and supplier diversity (which includes supporting disability-owned businesses). Also recognized as a strength has been the advocacy of EnAbles which is one of 11 Takeda Resource Groups (TRGs) in the U.S. and envisions an accessible workplace where all have the opportunity to realize their potential, unencumbered by barriers.

While those all continued to be areas of strength for Takeda this year, the jump to a top score of 100 in 2023 was driven primarily by improvements in the company’s journey to improve and enhance digital accessibility and efforts to make technology, tools and platforms more accessible and inclusive, such as:

  • Adding a dial-in number option for all virtual meetings, ensuring people can connect their hearing aids to the meeting audio.
  • Refining our new Takeda.com experience with accessibility enhancements that increased our digital accessibility score by over 30%
  • Using AI-generated live captions within virtual meetings

These top-scoring companies understand deeply that people with disabilities represent a tremendous source of talent and innovation for their workforce and market share for their brands, and they are trailblazers in our journey towards full disability inclusion in business.” added Maria Town, President and CEO of the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD), which is a convener, connector, and catalyst for change, increasing the political and economic power for people with disabilities.
